What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neuropsychiatric condition characterized by inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive behaviors. When you have ADHD, the neural pathways and neurotransmitters in your brain make it more difficult for you to remain focused, sit still, and practice self-control.

In children and teens, ADHD can interfere with learning, school performance, social relationships, and family life. This can lead to co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression.

What causes ADHD?

The exact cause of ADHD isn’t fully understood. Genetics affect brain chemistry and most likely play a role in ADHD. Traumatic experiences and environmental stressors may also contribute to ADHD.

It’s more likely to be diagnosed in boys. However, girls often exhibit inattentive symptoms rather than hyperactive symptoms, which might prevent them from obtaining a diagnosis of ADHD.

How do I know if my child has ADHD?

Signs of ADHD in school-aged children and adolescents may include:

  • Squirming, fidgeting, or needing to move constantly
  • Difficulty listening
  • Inability to play quietly
  • Excessive talking
  • Interrupting
  • Inability to complete tasks
  • Easily distracted
  • Easily bored
  • Disorganized
  • Difficulty maintaining friends
  • Reckless or risk-taking behavior

ADHD frequently co-occurs with other mood disorders and learning disabilities, such as dyslexia.
