Depression Q & A

What is depression?

Depression is a common mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and despair. All children and teenagers experience these emotions now and then, but typically they resolve within a few days.

When depressive emotions continue for more than a few weeks, they can interfere with school, social interactions, and family relationships.

Depression has specific challenges for children and adolescents because their brains aren’t fully developed, and they don’t yet have the vocabulary, practice, or knowledge to process their emotions healthily.

What causes depression?

Many variables contribute to depression. Genetics, life experiences, stress, and other factors can increase your risk of developing major depressive disorder.

School-aged children and adolescents find themselves faced with increasingly complex interpersonal situations as the demands of learning as well as family and community expectations continue to expand.

Depression symptoms can make it even harder for your child to cope with these pressures, which results in ongoing negative feelings that can cause harm if left unaddressed.

How do I know if my child is depressed?

Children and teens with depression experience similar feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and sorrow.

Signs that your child might suffer from depression include:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Increased school absences
  • Difficulty with social interactions
  • Failure to complete assignments
  • Lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Defiance of authority
  • Substance abuse
  • Illegal activities, such as stealing

If your child has expressed thoughts of suicide or self-harm, don’t hesitate to seek help from a qualified mental health provider.
